The Toner Prize for Excellence in Political Reporting recognizes the best U. S. national or local political reporting in any medium or on any platform—print, broadcast or online. Starting in 2020, there will be two Prizes: The Toner Prize for Excellence in National Political Reporting and the Toner Prize for Excellence in Local Political Reporting. Each includes a $5,000 honorarium. The Prizes are awarded annually by Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
The Toner Prizes recognize outstanding political reporting in a tribute to alumna Robin Toner ’76, the late national political correspondent for The New York Times. Entries will be judged on how well they reflect the high standards and depth of reporting that marked Toner’s work. Also in 2020, the criteria are refined to focus on Toner’s special passion for coverage of campaigns, candidates and elections. The Prizes won’t be limited to campaign coverage. But, in particular, the judges will look for how well the entries:
- Illuminate the electoral process, with a special focus on coverage of candidates, campaigns or elections, or
- reveal the politics of policy and
- engage the public in democracy.
Entries must be fact-based reporting, not commentary. Single articles, series or a body of work are eligible. Books are ineligible.Winners are honored each spring at an award celebration in Washington, D. C.
